2019 Quilt Challenges, Quilt Alongs and BOMs

Here you will find a growing and ever changing list of quilt challenges, quilt alongs and blocks of the month. Sewliloquies has created this list as a convenience for quilters interested in joining an ongoing quilting challenge.

This list includes casual and fun challenges and quilt alongs, and is not a resource for competitive entry challenges, but may include competitive contests. Links are provided when known.

Please feel free to comment below to suggest a challenge, quilt along or BOM, and if you notice any incorrect information. Happy quilting!

Gypsy Wife quilt along

This quilt along will work through Jen Kingwell’s Gypsy Wife pattern, which can be a little overwhelming at first glance. Using the designer’s pattern (purchase of the pattern is required), the quilt along will help quilters walk through the quilt in sections at a guided pace.

Bob Ross challenge

Following on the heels of 2018’s wildly successful Prince (and previous) challenges, Cherrywood Fabrics has created the Bob Ross challenge for 2019.

Entry requires the purchase of a specialized kit of fabric, that is limited to the famous Bob Ross art palette. The $60 kit includes registration and 2 yards of a very limited fabric bundle. Entrants must use only this fabric when creating their quilt! Entries due July 1st.

National Quilt Museum New Quilts from Old Favorites

In 2019, the NQM challenge for 2020 exhibit is to create an innovative quilt using traditional quilt blocks “Wheel of Fortune”. The entry fee is $50, and entries are due November 4th.

Hoffman Challenge

UPDATE: The Hoffman Challenge is being restructered and will be announced during the spring of 2019.

This challenge requires the use of a single fabric, and other fabrics can be incorporated into the design. Quilt categories include appliqué , pieced, modern and mixed technique.

365 Challenge

Kathryn Kerr’s 365 Challenge is a block a day. One. Block. A. Day. A great challenge for new quilters, this challenge uses basic rotary cutting and simple piecing that results in a stunning sampler quilt. The patterns are free from the designer. Every day is a new quilt block, and there is a Facebook support page!

Pat Sloan quilt alongs

From what I can tell, Pat Sloan is offering TWO quilt alongs in 2019. One is called Out of This World! which is a space themed mystery BOM, and the other is A Flower Bouquet block a week.

Garden Sunshine BOM

A 12 month BOM from Quilt Doodle Doodles, this block of the month is best when using 1930s reproduction fabrics for a cute historical re-creation. This scrappy sampler will offer a quilt block every month, so be sure to sign up for the mailing list.

Fandom in Stitches Star Trek along

Trekkies rejoice! Fandom in Stitches will be doing the delayed Star Trek quilt along starting in January. Fandom quilters are just finishing up Daphne Seymour’s Hocus Pocus qal. Fandom in Stitches designers create paper pieced patterns for free personal use. The Star Trek quilt along design is still a mystery, so check back often to see what our intrepid quilters discover.

Murder Mystery Quilt

The Murder Mystery Quilt is an innovative block of the month where you Read It – Sew It – Solve It. Each month you receive a chapter of a mystery story, and the quilt block for the month. Solve the mystery for entry to win prizes. This is a subscription BOM for $9 a month, or you can purchase the entire year for $99.

Trinket Sew Along

The Trinket Sew Along by Alison Glass lets you create 40 foundation paper pieced blocks and lasts for 10 weeks. Sew a block a day, and even enter your blocks and finished quilt for giveaways! #TRINKETSAL on Instagram
