The Opossum that Brought Back my Sewjo

While opossums are animals that live in my area in New England, I rarely see them. However, when I was driving on our backwoods roads one night a few weeks ago, there was one on the road. (Don’t worry, I didn’t hit it.) I took that as a sign that I was on the right track, because I also recently finished my opossum art quilt.

This has been a journey – one longer than I had hoped it would be. When I first started this quilt, it was a collaboration with my husband, Oliver. As an art teacher, with an art degree, he had unique perspectives on my art quilts and it was important to me that I got his feedback on what I was creating. He passed in 2024. Quilting was no longer any type of priority for me. I was focused on grieving, rebuilding my life without him, and being a single mom to our child. While I tried to sew here and there, my heart just wasn’t in it.

Over a year and a half later, I am now fully invested in quilting again. I recently finished this art quilt, with all of my process documented in videos that I share on YouTube.

Could I have done better? I don’t know… I’d have to ask Oliver. I know that my art quilt process isn’t bad, and I am happy with this result. But this quilt finish is bittersweet. Thankfully, I have a lot of unfinished projects that I have pulled out and I am working on. I also have a lot of ideas on how to continue to build Sewliloquies, and quilts I want to make. Right now, I have my sewjo back, and I take that as a blessing.
