A skill tree is a visual representation of knowledge or skills that can be used to map progression and achievement. It is commonly used within role-playing games to customize character abilities. The idea has also moved into career development as a way to organize and chart professional learning. In the hobby world, a skill tree can be used to identify and track your own personal growth path. There are skill trees for craft artisans, such as knitting and crochet, woodworking, or embroidery.

I am constantly trying to grow in my craft by experimenting with different techniques and learning more methods to achieve the art I envision. I looked for a skill tree for art quilting, and while there are some out there for art and also for sewing and quilting, I was unable to find one that combined the artistic aspects with sewing and fabric. So I created an art quilt skill tree.

This skill tree includes the foundational knowledge to begin as an art quilter, and progresses through the skills to develop advanced abilities. I love applique quilts, for example, but I often feel limited by the fusible and cutting precise, templated shapes. There is a place for that skill, and it is a technique that, when mastered, can produce phenomenal results. Yet, for those of us that hope to truly leverage the artistic process, more is needed.

The artist side of me wants the freedom and flexibility to express creatively. Traditional, foundation paper and English piecing, of course, but patterns often feel too confining. I spent nearly a decade experimenting with art quilt creation through collage, painting, and thread painting. Now, I have the confidence to share what I have learned through trial and error, with the goal of enabling others to explore and create art quilts.

These skills are, individually, mostly foundational and definitely achievable. I believe that, collectively, developing all of these skills can offer fabric artists the toolbox needed to really create art quilts they love and others can enjoy.

There are many art quilters in the creative space now who inspire us. Sometimes, we look at their work in awe, much like visiting art in a gallery, asking how they make that magic happen but perhaps believing we could never reach that creative mastery. We can build these skills, and we can create magical art quilts. It does take time, materials investment, and practice. I am still practicing and refining. However, it is skill based, not a gift or talent only some people hold. If creating quilted art is a goal for you, the art quilt skill tree can help guide you in your personal learning plan. I am a forever student, always reaching to acquire new to me knowledge.

Cultivate your growth as an art quilter by learning and practicing the progressive skills that help you manifest the art quilts within you.

Letโ€™s dig in to the skill tree. Art quilting is a blend of art knowledge and techniques, and sewing and quilting skills. At the foundational level, it is being able to create imagery from fabric. At a skill building level, it is using materials and methods to construct a visual representation that expresses thoughts and feelings. At a mastery level, art quilts have the blessing of sharing our experience of the world through ideas, emotions or stories told visually through fabric.

Skills grow from two foundational areas: art and quilting. Both branches of skills should be developed and used together. The skill tree is both structured and flexible, but the true beauty is not in completing a skill but using these skills through discipline as part of a personal journey. As skills grow stronger, what results is more confidence and creativity.

Art Branch

Learning art is a way to explore your creativity as you experience the world you are in. Practicing techniques allows for different perspectives, which can be a powerful emotional journey in addition to creating imagery that you can be proud of. Practicing art skills has many personal benefits, and allows you to move from what you can imagine to something tangible. Creating art using fabric as a medium still demands knowledge of art theory, composition, and media. The process of acquiring these skills admittedly requires patience and precision, but growth enables us to use fabric mediums in a unique way to express ourselves.

These art skills include:

  • Elements
  • Principles
  • Finding Inspiration
  • Mixed Media

Quilting Branch

Learning sewing and quilting skills includes practice and exploring the different techniques of using fabric to create art. The foundational skills such as choosing quilt fabrics, cutting, and pressing quickly opens the door to intermediate and advanced knowledge such as collage applique, thread painting, and free motion quilting that will enhance your quilt art. Adding mixed media skills expands your creative expression through dyeing, painting, or fabric manipulation. Functionality transforms into artwork through color, pattern, texture, and dimension.

These quilting skills include:

  • Selecting fabric
  • Sewing skills
  • Piecing
  • Quilting
  • Applique
  • Finishing

Synthesis

As art knowledge and quilting skills are applied in conjunction, you develop the ability to express a vision through fabric. The foundation of art theory and practice gives an art quilter the flexibility to move beyond basic construction and toward intentional composition of fabric art with meaning. Understanding color theory, principles of composition, and how to selectively incorporate embellishments means we can craft original pieces in a tangible form. What that means as a quilt artists is a new freedom to push boundaries, explore textures, and produce something with technical expertise and artistic expression.

Synthesizing these skills means you can take thoughts, emotions, and life experiences and transform them into a visual representation that is unique and extraordinary because it is uses the specific medium of fabric. Quilts become statements that reveal creative thinking and demonstrate authenticity.

The best way to define these skills is through an art quilt skill tree, and I have created one to share. Much like a tree can only blossom by first growing roots, the skill tree can be worked from the bottom up. The foundational skills are the roots, that develop into branches, allowing for choice of progression.
